From Drug Dealing to Harm Reduction: the Story of Narcan Nate

Michael W. Brown is the global director of counter-narcotics technology at Rigaku Analytical Devices. He has a distinguished career spanning more than 32 years as a Special Agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Most recently he was the DEA Headquarters staff coordinator for the Office of Foreign Operations for the Middle East-Europe-Afghanistan-India. Prior to that he served as the country attaché in India and Myanmar providing foreign advisory support for counter narcotic enforcement. He also spent 10 years in Pakistan as a special advisor to the US Embassy on various law enforcement issues. Michael is a graduate of the United States Ranger Training Battalion and has a master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Technology and Management from the University of Eastern Michigan.
    

 

We have a conversation with Nathan Smiddy, also known as "Narcan Nate."

Nate is a Harm Reduction Education Specialist in long-term recovery.  We dive into Nate's background and discover how he got started in the world of drugs and alcohol, coming from a family involved in law enforcement.  From selling drugs through high school and beyond, to now being sober and advocating for harm reduction, Nate shares his unique perspective on the current state of drug policy and its impact on society.

We also discuss the controversial topic of drug scheduling and reform, while exploring ways to correct the errors made by Big Pharma.  

Nate shares his vision for funding harm reduction efforts, and what needs to be done to make it a reality in communities.
